Prime suspect detained in Narsingdi for ‘indecent clothes’ harassment

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a woman for harassing and assaulting another woman at the Narsingdi Railway Station recently for wearing ‘indecent clothes.’

Marzia Akter Shila alias Shila alias Saima, the incident's main suspect, was arrested in Narsingdi's Shibpur neighborhood on Monday.

Marzia is a matchmaker by profession who resides in the Narsingdi Sadar crossing area.

According to RAB-11 Camp Commander Touhidul Mobin Khan, Marzia, who is accused of initiating the attack on the young woman, was arrested from her aunt's house in Narsingdi's Itakhola area about 3 a.m. on Monday.

She has used different names - Shila and Saima - in the past. 

According to the RAB official, the judicial process is also ongoing in this matter.

A young woman was physically assaulted on May 18 while waiting for a train with two friends for wearing "indecent attire," according to the attackers.

The woman was forced to seek shelter in the station master's room in order to flee the enraged crowd. After that, she boarded a train bound for Dhaka.

Many people protested in person and on social media in response to the incident, which sparked nationwide indignation.

The harassing incident was reported to the Bhairab police station on May 21, and In-Charge Emayedul Jahedi of the Narsingdi railway police outpost filed a case, identifying two people and ten additional unknown defendants.

Md Ismail, 38, the son of late Badal Mia of the Budiamara area of the Najarpur union, and Marzia Akter, the wife of Foyez Ahmed of the Narsingdi upazila crossing area were made accused in the case.

One of them, Ismail Hossain, was arrested by police near the rail station on the night of May 20.

According to Investigation Officer SI Harunuzzaman Rumel, the court granted a three-day remand for Ismail after they sought a seven-day remand for interrogation.
