Flood situation deteriorates in Sylhet, Sunamganj

Due to the swelling of major rivers caused by prolonged rain and the onrush of water from upstream, the flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts has worsened.

Thousands of residents were stranded as floodwaters overwhelmed their homes in 15 upazilas in Sylhet and Sunamganj.

In the space of two months, the suffering of individuals in flood-affected communities has reached a pinnacle.

The government's humanitarian efforts are still ongoing. Due to the steady rise in water levels, new areas are being flooded.

Water levels in all major rivers, including the Surma and the Kushiara, are continuing to increase, according to officials with the Sylhet Water Development Board (WDB). Surma river water is flowing over the danger line at all times.

In addition, water levels in the Border Rivers, such as the Sari, Dhalai, and Lobachhara, are higher than typical. The Kushiyara River is becoming increasingly dangerous as the water level rises.

Meanwhile, Sylhet has been drenched in severe rains for the past 24 hours on Thursday.

Lalakhal experienced 283 mm of rain, Chhatak 200 mm, Sunamganj 185 mm, Kanaighat 115 mm, Jaflong 113 mm, Zakiganj 86 mm, Sheola 64 mm, and Sylhet Sadar 45 mm, according to Meteorological Department data.

Rainfall totaled 674 mm at Cherrapunji, Meghalaya. As a result, water levels in Sylhet and Sunamganj's rivers and haors continue to increase. The water level in the Surma River is presently 32 cm above the danger limit at Sylhet Point, and 93 cm at Kanaighat Point.

Rising water has swamped at least 15 wards of the Sylhet City Corporation.

Six unions in Sadar upazila, four in South Surma, nine in Kanaighat, four in Zakiganj, six in Beanibazar, three in Golapganj, two in Bishnath, six in Jaintapur, ten in Gowainghat, and eight in Companiganj have been inundated.

Apart from the municipality of Sunamganj, the upazilas of Sadar, Tahirpur, Bishwambharpur, Chhatak, and Doarabazar have also been flooded. The water situation in the upazilas of Doarabazar and Chhatak is quite precarious. The two upazilas' communication systems are fully separated.

Shafiqul Islam, the Sunamganj District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer, said 330 tons of rice and Taka 9 lakh in cash were sent to the respective upazila administration and people's representatives for distribution.
