Road crashes leave 8 dead

Two different road crashes have left eight people dead in Gazipur and Comilla on Sunday.

Five people were killed and at least 10 injured when a bus carrying garment factory workers collided with a train in Gazipur's Sreepur.

The injured were rescued and sent to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex.

A bus carrying workers of a factory called Zaman Fashion of Mauna area collided with Mymensingh-bound Balaka Express at Maijpara railway crossing of Barmi Union of the upazila at around 7:30 am on Sunday.

Sreepur Railway Station Master Harun Or Rashid confirmed the casualties.

He said that all the victims were passengers of the bus and they were garment factory workers.

One of the dead is Rahima Khatun, wife of Julhas Mia, a resident of Baliapara village in Sripur upazila. She was working as an operator in Zaman Fashion Limited. Another dead is Priya.

Three people, including a husband and his wife, were killed when the driver of a private car lost control over the steering in Comilla and fell into a roadside ditch in Saharpar area of Debidwar upazila on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Sunday morning.

Highway Comilla Region Superintendent of Police Muhammad Rahmat Ullah confirmed the deaths to The Daily Samakal.

The three deceased were identified as Gias Uddin Mahmud Farazi, a resident of Faraji Manzil in Bananipara area of Feni Sadar Upazila and Assistant Land Officer, his wife Jahanara Akhtar and his sister-in-law Salma Akhtar Najma.

Gias Uddin was driving the car himself.

The police said that the car damaged in the accident and the bodies of the victims were recovered and kept at the Elliotganj highway outpost.

The names of the other deceased are not yet known.

Their bodies have been handed over to Gafargaon Railway Police in Mymensingh.
