Tk170 daily wage fixed for tea workers

The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed that the current Tk120 daily salary for workers in tea gardens be increased to Tk170.

According to Dr. Ahmed Kaikaus, the PM's senior secretary, a meeting between tea garden owners and the prime minister on Saturday resulted in the decision to boost the daily wages of tree plantation workers by Tk50.

Workers in 241 tea gardens around the nation participated in ongoing strikes in support of a rise in the daily wage in line with commodity prices.

Instead of the current rate of Tk120, they demanded a minimum daily income of Tk300.

From August 9 through August 11, the workers abstained from working for two hours each day.

An indefinite strike began on 13 August.
