Foreign national among 4 held over ATM card forgery

Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested a foreign national and three officials of City Bank in connection with recent ATM card forgery in the country.

Confirming about the arrest, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) spokesperson Maruf Hossain Sardar today said the arrestee is identified as Peter and he is a citizen of Poland.

The arrested three City Bank officials are identified as Moksed Ali Maksud, Rezaul Karim Shahin and Refat Ahmed Rony. 

Details in this regard will be disclosed at a press conference at DMP Media centre later in the day, Maruf Hossain added.

It was the first of its kind ATM scam. Fraudsters skimmed off ATM cards of the clients and withdrew the money from various booths of three banks.

ON February 17, DMP’s Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam said that a citizen of East Europe is suspected to be involved in recent ATM card forgery incidents as detectives have already identified 4-5 foreigners through scrutinising CCTV footages.

The official said a case was filed with Banani Police Station in connection with ATM cards forgery. The case has already been transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

The Additional Commissioner said the detectives have also been investigating if local people, including bank employees and officials, are involved in the forgery.

On February 12, authority of the United Commercial Bank (UCB) has filed the case with Banani Police station as at least Tk 1.26 lakh was misappropriated through several ATM cards forgery recently.

The Bangladesh Bank on February 13, asked several banks to block around 200 ATM cards as those are believed to have been read by “skimming devices” during February 7-9.
