Onion imports start, price falls readily

Import of onion has started through the Bhomra land port, prompting a decline in the price of the commodity in the local market.

The price of onion was Tk 90-100 on Sunday, which sharply fell by Tk 20-25 to Tk 75-80 on Tuesday.

Eleven trucks carrying 287 tonnes of onion entered Bangladesh through the Bhomra land port on Monday afternoon. Ten more trucks were waiting to enter the port on Tuesday morning, said Iftekharuddin, the land port's superintendent.

The fall in price has brought relief among consumers. According to traders, an increase in imports will bring down the price even further and make the commodity more affordable for the people.

Satkhira Sultanpur Boro Bazar's trader Abdul Bari said, "The price of onion was Tk 90-100 till Sunday. The price started to fall on Monday after the government announced the decision to import onion."

The trader expects the onion price to fall further.
