Bangladesh can export flowers worth $500 million annually

Agriculture Minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said Bangladesh can earn $500 million each year by exporting flowers.

He estimates that Bangladesh has the potential to generate $500 million in sales from the yearly $36 billion global flower market.

The minister made the comments on Friday during the launch of the Department of Agricultural Marketing's wholesale flower market and processing plant in Gabtoli, Dhaka.

The minister believes that flowers may make a substantial contribution to the sustained expansion of the Bangladeshi economy.

He said Bangladesh should now concentrate on developing new flower varieties utilizing cutting-edge technologies.

According to traders, the domestic flower sector employs 15 lakh people and the country annually sells flowers worth Tk 1,500 crore.

The demand for flowers is increasing both nationally and globally, they said, adding that they will be able to process and export flowers thanks to the wholesale market that the Department of Agricultural Marketing established.
