62 thousand eggs arrive from India

Around one and a half months after receiving permission from the government, the first consignment of eggs imported from India finally reached Bangladesh.

A truck carrying the eggs entered Bangladesh through Benapole at 5:26pm on Sunday. The consignment carries 61,950 pieces of eggs imported by Dhaka-based BDS Corporation.

These eggs were priced at slightly more than Tk 5 per piece. Their retail price may end up as Tk 12 per piece.

Confirming the matter, Benapole Land Port Director (Traffic) Rezaul Karim said directions were given to release the eggs fast and with appropriate caution.

The price of a dozen eggs has reached as much as Tk 170 in the local market despite measures taken by the government to strengthen market monitoring. In light of such a situation, the government first gave the permission to import 4 crore eggs on September 18. Later, permission was given to import another 12 crore eggs.
