MPs may have to pay tax on car imports

Lawmakers of the country have enjoyed duty-free benefits to import cars for the last 36 years. However, the practice of tax exemption is likely to be reversed in the upcoming national budget for FY2024-25. 

According to a source in the finance ministry, members of the parliament would have to pay a 25 per cent import tax and 15 per cent value-added tax (VAT) to import cars.
