Tk 92,261 crore embezzled in banking scams in 15 years: CPD

During 2008-2023, Tk 92,261 crore, equivalent to 12 per cent of the national budget or 2 per cent of the GDP of FY23, was embezzled in 24 major banking scams, the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has found. 

CPD shared this information at a press conference titled "Bringing Discipline in the Banking Sector: What Should be Done Immediately," on Monday. 

To improve the situation, commercial banks need to be strengthened, the independence of Bangladesh Bank should be upheld, and integrity and availability of timely data should be ensured, CPD Executive Director Dr Fahmida Khatun said at the press conference.
