Bangladesh Bank has appointed observers to four private sector banks—National Bank, Al-Arafah Islami Bank, Premier Bank, and IFIC Bank—to closely monitor their operations and financial activities.
The central bank finalised this decision this week and issued appointment letters on March 9, 2026.
This step forms part of Bangladesh Bank's ongoing efforts to strengthen oversight in the banking sector.
Arief Hossain Khan, executive director and spokesperson for Bangladesh Bank, described the appointments as a continuous process aimed at ensuring better governance and stability.
The appointed observers include Munir Ahmed Chowdhury, director of the Bank Supervision Department-12, assigned to National Bank; Mohammad Anisur Rahman, director of the Islami Banking Regulations and Policy Department, assigned to Al-Arafah Islami Bank; ANM Moinul Kabir, director of the Payment Systems Department-1, assigned to Premier Bank; and AKM Kamruzzaman, director of the Forex Reserve and Treasury Management Department-1, assigned to IFIC Bank.
Bangladesh Bank typically appoints observers to institutions facing deteriorating financial health or governance challenges.
These observers participate in board meetings, review decisions, and report back to the central bank, with their role continuing until the bank's condition improves sufficiently.
The move follows earlier reforms, including the restructuring of boards at 14 banks after the fall of the Awami League-led government on August 5, 2024.
During that period, politically influential figures had dominated many bank boards, contributing to weakened financial positions in several institutions.
