The chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), Khandaker Rashed Maqsood, along with four commissioners, has resigned.
The resignations were submitted on Thursday morning, a senior official from the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance has confirmed.
Jahangir Hossain, personal officer to the BSEC chairman, told Daily Samakal, “I delivered Sir’s resignation letter to the ministry this morning. He did not come to the office after sending the letter.”
The four commissioners who also resigned are Md Mohsin Chowdhury, Md Ali Akbar, Farzana Lalarukh, and Md Saifuddin.
Sources at the Financial Institutions Division said the process of appointing a new chairman and commissioners had already begun, with notifications expected to be issued later on Thursday.
The development comes amid sustained pressure on the BSEC leadership. For several months, officers and employees of the commission held various protests, including work stoppages, demanding the chairman’s resignation.
General investors also staged demonstrations, such as human chains, protest marches, and road blockades, calling for his removal.
Khandaker Rashed Maqsood was appointed chairman on August 18, 2024 for a four-year term, following the resignation of the previous chairman,
Professor Shibli Rubaiyat-ul Islam, who went into hiding after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, 2024.
Md Mohsin Chowdhury was appointed commissioner on June 2, 2024, followed by Md Ali Akbar on August 28, 2024, Farzana Lalarukh on September 3, 2024, and Md Saifuddin on July 29, 2025.
The mass resignation has sparked fresh discussions across the capital market.
