Hilsa sale gains momentum at Padmapar

In the peak season, hilsa, incomparable in taste and smell, is caught in flocks in Padma. This has led to a boom in trading nearby Padmapar. Starting from dawn, there is a rush of buyers and sellers in the stalls till 8 am. Depending on the size, hilsa is being sold for Tk500 to Tk2000 per kg.

In the Mawa fishing stalls of Munshiganj's Lauhajong, the supply of hilsa is sufficient. Buyers are coming from different parts of Dhaka, Narayanganj and surrounding areas including wholesalers of local markets. Although there are other fishes, Padma hilsa has a special demand for its delicious taste.

Mawa fish market-affiliates said that in Mawa of Padmapar there are 32 markets to trade fish every day. Fishermen brought the fish here caught in the river overnight. Then the sales started.

The sellers said that hilsa weighing one and a half to two kilograms is being sold at Tk 1800-2000, hilsa weighing 1 kg to 1400 grams at Tk1400-Tk1600, hilsa weighing 800-900 grams at Tk1200 per kg and hilsa weighing 500 grams is being sold at Tk 500-Tk800 per kg.
