Auto-rickshaw strike begins in Sylhet

An indefinite strike enforced by the District Auto-rickshaw Workers’ Union began early Sunday.

 

President of the union, Md. Zakaria, announced the strike, demanding an end to police harassment, including unnecessary filing of cases against auto-rickshaw operators and realizing excessive fines from them.

 

He said that the strike that began at 6 am will continue until their demands are met.

 

When asked about public sufferings, Zakaria replied that they were well aware of that but failure to take actions by the departments concerned left them with no choice.

 

Around 20,000 CNG-run auto-rickshaws operate on different routes in the district, he said.
