Mahfuz Anam granted bail in Rangpur lawsuit

A Rangpur court on Tuesday granted bail to The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam in connection with a defamation case.

 

Senior Judicial Magistrate Shafiul Alam granted him bail on a bond of  Tk 1,000 after hearing the case, reports the UNB.

 

The court also fixed May 26 for next hearing in the case.

 

Earlier, local Awami League leader Motahar Hossain Mandal Mawla filed a Tk 1 crore defamation case with the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court on February 15 against Anam for publishing ‘confusing’ and ‘defamatory’ reports in his daily on Awami League President Sheikh Hasina during the military-backed caretaker government.

 

The court also summoned the accused for appearance on Mar 1.
