1,300 accused for Mathbaria polls violence

Police on Thursday filed a case over violence on the day of Union Parishad (UP) polls at Mathbaria upazila in Pirojpur, which left five people killed.

Sub-inspector of Armed Police Battalion Sanawar Ali khan, who was on duty at the Safa Degree College during the violence, filed the case accusing 1,300 unidentified people of poll centre takeover, ballot snatching and obstruction of government duties.

Khandaker Mustafizur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mathbaria Police Station, confirmed about the case to Samakal.


Police said that supporters of Awami League candidate besieged the polling centre at the Safa Degree College under Dhanisafa union in Mathbaria upazila during vote counting.

They did not leave despite several calls by the police.

The law enforces opened fire to disperse them when three died on the spot, while two other died later at a hospital.
