5 to die for killing child in Habiganj

A Habiganj court has awarded death penalty to five people in a case filed for killing a 13-year-old boy in the district.

District and Session Judge Mafroja Parvin handed down the verdict on Monday.

The death-row convicts are: Ali Haidar, Renu Mia, Abdul Ahad, Habib Mia and Ranju Mia. Of them, Ranju Mia remains absconding. 

The boy, Ziaul Haque, was killed in Baniachong Upazila over a land dispute his parents had with the convicts.

Additional Public Prosecutor Abdul Ahad Faruk said that the teenager was murdered on May 13, 1994. Police recovered the body from a jungle of the village on the following day.

Ziaul’s father Rupchan filed a case with Habiganj court accusing nine people on January 19. 1995.

Charges were pressed against six people over the killing, but one of them died during the trial.
