Executed war criminal Nizami buried in home town Pabna

Country’s top war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami, hanged for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, was buried near his ancestral home in Santhia upazila after his execution in the small hours of Wednesday, reports the UNB.

 

Nizami was buried at the graveyard, 300 yards away from his residence at Manmathpur in the upazila around 7:00 am after a namaj-e-janaza, said his son Barrister Najib Momen.

 

An ambulance carrying the body of the executed war criminal left Dhaka Central Jail premises for Pabna at 1:30 am.

 

It arrived at Manmathpur in Santhia around 6:35 am.

 

Majharul Islam, deputy jailer of Dhaka Central Jail, handed over Nizami’s body to his son Barrister Najib Momen around 6:40 am.

 

After long six years of trial, the 73-year-old ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was hanged in Dhaka Central Jail at 12:10 am.

 

“Motiur Rahman Nizami was hanged at 12:10 am for his crimes against humanity,” Senior Jail Super of Dhaka Central Jail Jahangir Kabir told reporters at the jail gate around 12:30 am.

 

Acting Inspector General (Prisons) Col Iqbal Hasan, Civil Surgeon Abdul Malek Mridha, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Mohammad Salauddin and Jail Super Jahangir Kabir were present during the hanging.

 

With the latest execution, five war criminals have so far been executed, while two others— Jamaat leader Ghulam Azam and BNP leader Abdul Alim who had been sentenced to imprisonment unto death— died in jail.

 

Earlier, Jamaat leaders Abdul Quader Mollah, AHM Kamaruzzaman, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury were executed as they had been awarded death penalty for their crimes against humanity in 1971.
