Youth beaten dead over suspected stealing in Sitakunda

A young man was beaten to death allegedly by a group of local people at Shitalpur village in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong early Wednesday on allegation of stealing a mobile phone set, reports the UNB.

 

The deceased was identified as Abdul Malek, 26, son of Siddik Patwari, a resident of Hajiganj upazila in Chandpur district.

 

He used to live in a rented house at Bagula Bazar in the same upazila.

 

Quoting locals and family members, sub-inspector of Sitakunda Police Station Kamal said one Azam, along with his men, numbering 10-12, picked up Malek from Bagula Bazar near his house and took him to Shitalpur village on Tuesday night alleging that Malek stole a mobile phone set.

 

Later, Azam and his accomplices reportedly beat Malek mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot.

 

On Wednesday morning, family members rushed to the spot and noticed the body of Malek lying there and informed police.

 

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy at about 10:00 am.

 

The lay enforcers also arrested five people in connection with the murder.
