RU teacher killing: Arrested Shibir leader dies

A Shibir leader, who was arrested in connection with the murder of Rajshahi University (RU) teacher Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) early Thursday.

The accused, Hafizur Rahman, a student of the Public Administration department of the university, was general secretary of no 19 ward unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

Shafiqul Islam, superintendent of Rajshahi Central Jail, said Hafizur died of anemia at the hospital around 4:30am.

Brigadier General AFM Rafiqul Islam, Director of RMCH, said Hafizur was taken to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and he died early today due to irreversible cardio-respiratory failure.

On April 28, a Rajshahi court allowed police to take Hafizur on a four-day remand over the killing. Later, he was sent to Rajshahi jail on completion of his remand.

Prof Siddiquee was murdered on the morning of April 23, only 50 yards away from his residence in the city’s Shalbagan while he was on his way to the university.
