10 killed in UP polls violence

Comilla: A rebel chairman candidate of the BNP has been murdered during a clash with supporters of the party-nominated candidate at Titas upazila in Comilla today.

 

The incident took place near a polling centre of Balarampur union under the upazila at around 3:30 during the fifth phase of the Union Parishad (UP) elections.

 

The dead chairman aspirant Kamal Uddin was a rebel candidate of the BNP. He took part in the polls with Pineapple symbol.

 

Comilla's assistant superintendent of police Iqbal Hossain Hazari confirmed the matter to Samakal.

 

According to police, BNP’s candidate Tofail Ahmed and his followers attacked rebel candidate Kamal Uddin and his followers with sharp weapons on the way to Nager Char Primary School polling center, leaving Kamal critically wounded. Latter, he was taken to the local hospital where doctors declared him dead.

 

Kamrul Islam, retuning officer, said, Kamal Uddin was murdered in the polls violence nearly half kilometer away from the polling centre.

 

Jamalpur: Four people were killed in a clash between the supporters of two chairman candidates at Bahadurabad union under Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur during elections.

 

The incident took place at Futar Char Madrasa polling center of the union at around 10:30am, police said.

 

The deceased were identified as Zia, 32, of Kutuber Char village of Bahadurabad union, Nabirul Islam, 15, of the same village, Nurul Islam, 50, of Sheikhpara village of the union and Maze Mia, 15, of the same village and a class eight student.

 

The supporters of the two chairman candidates locked into a clash at the Futar Char Madrasa polling center of the union at around 10:30am, leaving the four dead, police and witnesses said.

 

Police and Bangladesh Boarder Guard (BGB) members fired 50 rounds of bullets to take the situation under control, added the witnesses.

 

The clash also left at least 30 people injured. They were taken to different local hospitals.

 

Patiya (Chittagong): At least three people including one ward member were killed in a clash over Union Parishad polls in Chittagong's Patiya upazila on Saturday.

 

The dead were identified as Md Yasin, Babul Shill and Rickshaw puller Mohammad.

 

Md Yasin was one of the ward members of the Bara Uthan union under the upazila.

 

The clash was erupted in the area over supremacy to seize the polling stations.

 

Chittagong Medical College Hospital's police checkpost Sub-Inspector (SI), Zahirul Islam, confirmed the dead to Samakal adding, 'Doctor declared Yasin dead while he was taken to the Hospital after the clash.'

 

Babul Shill, on the other hand, was killed while a clash erupted at one of the polling centers of Ashia union in the upazila. He was a voter in the area while police claimed he died in the heart attack on the day.

 

Patiya upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), Abul Hashem, however, has told Samakal, 'We have tried our best to maintain law and order situation and it is now under control.'

 

Noakhali: One person was killed in clash amid voting between the supporters of two union parishad candidates of Noakhali Begumgonj upazila's Rajgonj union.

 

The incident happend aropun 11:30 am on Saturday morning at Rajgonju Fazil Madrasa centere.

 

The deceased was identified as Syed Ahmed (65), a resident of Alauddinnagar of Rajgonj union.
