5 to die for killing Gazipur lawyer

A court here on Thursday convicted five people, including four members of a family, and sentenced them to death for killing an apprentice lawyer at Chhayabithi in Gazipur in 2008.

The condemned convicts-- Tithi, her mother Amena Begum and brothers Bappy and Sajal and her friend Badal—were also fined Tk 10,000 each.

Among them, Amena, Sajal and Bappy were tried in absentia, UNB reports.

According to the prosecution, Tithi, Bappy and Sajal hacked Masud Parvez, a resident of the area, over pervious enmity in 2006.

Following the incident, Masud’s father Sohrab Uddin Bhandari filed a case with Joydebpur Police Station against Tithi and her family members.

However, Tithi’s family members threatened Masud and his father to withdraw the case.

As Masud’s father didn’t withdraw the case, Tithi along with his brothers and friend Badal hacked apprentice lawyer Ferozzaman Sohel, brother of Masud Parvez, to death on March 9, 2008.

Following the incident, Shohel’s father filed a murder case with Joydebpur Police Station against Tithi and her family members.

On July 10, 2008, Sub-inspectors Raja Ali and Shahabuddin Shahin submitted a chargesheet against eight people.

After examining all documents and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 M Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan handed down the verdict.
