2 remanded over MP Liton murder

A Gaibandha court today placed two alleged persons-Ashraful Islam and Jahirul Islam-on a two-day remand for each in a case filed in connection with the murder of ruling Awami League lawmaker from Gaibandha-1 constituency Manzurul Islam Liton.

 

Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Mainul Hassan Yusuf in Gaibandha passed the order after conducting a hearing in this regard today.

 

The two alleged persons linked with Jamaat were held from the capital’s Badda area on January 11.

 

Earlier a case has been filed over the murder of ruling Awami League lawmaker from Gaibandha-1 constituency Manzurul Islam Liton who was shot dead by unidentified assailants at his home in Bamondanga area of Sundarganj on December 31.

 

Tahmida Bulbul Kakoli, sister of the dead MP, filed the case with the Sundarganj police staiton accusing six unknown persons on the following day.

 

Earlier citing the autopsy report, Narayanchandra Shaha, the chairperson of the forensic department of Rangpur Medical College, has told journalists that the MP was died due to "excessive bleeding".

 

According to family sources, three men riding on a motorbike came to Liton's house on Saturday evening and managed to flee after shooting him to dead.

 

“Liton was killed in a planned way," Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, however, opined after the murder incident.

 

The AL leader also the Road Transport and Bridge Minister in the country said, “Religious fundamentalists and communal forces are involved with the murder.”
