4 killed in ‘gunfight’ with cops in Meherpur

Four suspected criminals were killed in an alleged gunfight with police in Nurpur area under Meherpur Sadar upazila early Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Saddam Hossain, 25, son of Vadu Sheikh, Ramesh, 24, son of Bonomali Karmakar, Sohag, 27, son of Moniruddin and Kanon, 25, son of Jalil Uddin. All were residents of Sonapur village.

Anisur Rahman, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Meherpur, said that a team of police chased a gang of criminal around 2:30am.

When they reached in Nurpur area, the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate which triggered the gunfight, leaving the four dead on the spot, he said.

Six policemen, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ahsan Habib, were injured in the incident, said the SP.

The bodied were recovered and sent to Meherpur General Hospital, he said adding that legal action in this regard is being taken.
