Executed Mufti Hannan, 2 aides buried

Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and his associates -- Delwar Alias Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul -- who were hanged on Wednesday night over the grenade attack on ex-British envoy Anwar Choudhury in Sylhet in 2004 were buried at their village home early Thursday.

Mufti Hannan was buried at his village home in Gopalganj districts while his two associates in Chandpur and Moulvibazar districts respectively.

According to UNB, Hannan was buried at his family graveyard after a namaj-e-janaza at Hiron Bala Girls’ Madrasha and Orphanage premises around 5:45 am. Mufti Hannan’s brother Munshi Aliuzzaman conducted the namaj-e-janaza.

An ambulance carrying the body of the executed Huji Chief arrived here around 5:20 am amid tight security. Kotalipara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zilal Hossain, executive magistrate Mahbub Jamil and officer-in-charge of Kotali Para Police Station Quamrul Faruk were present during the burial.

Besides, Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul was buried at his family graveyard around 4:30 am at Meshadi village in Sadar upazila of Chandpur district. Bipul’s father Hemayet Uddin received the body and a namaj-e-janaza was held near the graveyard with participation of Bipul’s family and relatives.

Delwar Alias Ripon, another associate of Mufti Hannan, was buried at his village home after a namaz-e-janaza at Konagaon Shahi Eidgah Maidan in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar district early Thursday.

Konagaon Jam-e-Mosque Imam Ibrahim Ali conducted the namaj-e-janaza around 12:15 am. An ambulance carrying Ripon’s body reached his village around 12 am.

Earlier, on Wednesday night, Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and his associates -- Delwar Alias Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul -- were hanged over the grenade attack on ex-British envoy Anwar Choudhury in Sylhet in 2004.

Of them, Mufti Hannan and Bipul were executed at Kashimpur Central Jail at 10:01pm while Ripon at Sylhet Central Jail at the same time.

The three militants were hanged as President Abdul Hamid rejected their petitions seeking clemency.

On March 19, the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence of Mufti Hannan, Ripon and Bipul after hearing the review petitions filed by the three death-row convicts.

On December 7, 2016, the SC bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, upheld the death penalty of the three in the case rejecting appeals filed by the Huji chief and Bipul challenging the High Court verdict that had upheld their death sentence awarded by the tribunal.

On February 11, 2016, the High Court delivered the verdict upholding the death sentence of the three.

In 2004, the then British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury came under a grenade attack while coming out of Hazrat Shahjalal's shrine in his hometown Sylhet. The envoy and 40 employees of the Sylhet district administration were injured in the attack.

Assistant sub-inspector Kamal Uddin died on the spot while two constables -- Rubel Ahmed and Habil Miah -- succumbed to their injuries at hospital.
