Truck-auto-rickshaw collision leaves 5 dead in Joypurhat

Five people, including a woman, were killed and one woman was seriously injured in a collision between a truck and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw in Malipara area of Khetlal Upazila of Joypurhat at 11am on Monday.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khetlal Police Station Razibul Islam said that the deceased are – auto-rickshaw driver Amzad Hossain, 50, Nafiz Hossain, 20, Imam Sirajul Islam, 60, Shahnaz Parveen ,46, and Shahinur Akhtar, 50.

Khetlal Upazila Women's Affairs Officer Laila Jahan Nasrin was seriously injured in the incident and she was admitted to Joypurhat Modern District Hospital.

Eyewitness Amir Hossain said a head-on collision took place between truck and auto-rickshaw when the auto-rickshaw with passengers was heading to Khetlal from Joypurhat, leaving two people dead on the spot and four others injured. Later, three people died on the way to the hospital. 

The OC said the truck was seized but the driver and helper escaped the scene. An operation is underway to arrest them, he added.
