2 dead after boat sinks in Titas river

Two people were killed when a passenger boat capsized in the Titas river in Sitarampur area in Brahmanbaria's Nabinagar upazila after colliding with the bridge pillar on Wednesday evening.

The deceased are ninth grade student Ratri Chowdhury, daughter of Prahallad Chowdhury of the upazila, and Hafez Md. Mahmud Ullah son of Hafez Farooq Mia of Mirzarchar of Raipura upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Nabinagar police station Saifuddin Anwar said, “A passenger boat was going to Mirzachar in Raipura upazila of neighboring Narsingdi district from Nabinagar at noon. On the way, the boat collided with the pillar of the under-construction bridge at Sitarampur and sank. Two passengers of the boat died on the spot.”

He also said that the sailor and his associates escaped after the boat sank. The rest of the passengers managed to swim ashore.
