Nearly 17,000kg fish eggs collected from Halda River

Some popular species of fish specially Ruhi, Katla, Mrigel and Kalibaush have released a record quantity of eggs on Sunday around midnight in the river Halda, the lone natural fish breeding sanctuary in the country.

Nearly 17,000 kilograms of eggs were collected on Monday night. Every 60kg of eggs yield 1kg of fries.

These fishes usually release eggs between March to June. Around 750 fishers collected huge quantities of eggs in the early hours of Monday by some 300 boats.

The river Halda is the only natural breeding ground in south Asia where sweet water species like these fishes release their eggs at a certain period of the monsoon over a century.

After collecting the eggs using special nets, they are taken to hatcheries where they hatch into fries.

Shahidul Alam, UNO of Hathazari Upazila said the administration is monitoring the situation so that contraband eggs and fries cannot enter the area.
