Surma River crosses danger mark in Sunamganj

The water level in the Surma River swelled above the danger mark in Sunamganj on Tuesday.

However, authorities have taken measures to direct excess water into the haors of the region to prevent prolonged flooding in the area.

In the district's Chhatak point, the river's water level is flowing 80cm above the danger level.

However, the water was flowing below the danger mark in the other points of the district. The roads and residential areas have not waterlogged yet.

Sunamganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mamun Howlader said the onset of monsoon was delayed this year in both Sunamganj haor region and India's Meghalaya. As a result, the haors remained dry.

The rain started on June 14, he said, so the haor regulator was opened. In some places, haor borders were cut to facilitate the entry of water.

"Water entered 45 per cent area of haors. As a result, even if rain continues for the next few days, there will be no risk of prolonged drought in the area," he said.
