Sunamganj: Low-lying areas remain inundated, water level unchanged

Sparse rainfall occurred in Sunamganj and Cherapunji of India's Meghalaya, causing the water level in the rivers of Sunamganj to remain mostly unchanged. However, the low-lying areas of the district were still waterlogged on Tuesday, causing immense suffering to the locals.

On Tuesday morning, the Surma River's water level at the Sunamganj point was flowing 7cm above the danger mark. At Chhatak point, the level was 130cm above the mark.

In the last 24 hours, 50mm of rainfall was recorded in Sunamganj. In Chhatak, it was 47mm.

Several roads, houses and premises of houses were inundated in low-lying areas of Doarabazar, Chhatak, and Sunamganj Sadar upazila. A total of 37 families sought refuge at three shelters in Sunamganj. However, none of them received any aid till the filing of this report.

District Commissioner Didar-e-Alam Mohammad Maqsud Chowdhury confirmed that 37 families along with their domestic animals were in the shelters. They will go back home if the water level does not go up any further, he said.
