Matarbari power plant fire under control after 14hrs

A fire that broke out in a log pile in the Township area of the Matarbari coal-fired power plant in Cox's Bazar's Maheshkhali was brought under control.

The fire was brought under control at around 3am on Sunday, 14 hours after the log pile first caught fire.

Around 150 tonnes of logs and other goods were damaged in the fire, according to the authority. However, the reason behind the fire could not be identified yet.

The fire broke out in a log pile stocked by the Guardian company at around 1pm on Saturday creating panic among the workers and employees. Later, the project's security team and three units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) brought the blaze under control after hours of effort.

Confirming the incident, the project's security official Alfaz Uddin said some unused logs and equipment caught fire. Maheshkhali, Chakaria, and Pekua units of the FSCD, as well as the project's security team, fought the blaze together.

Nearly 150 tonnes of log, as well as other equipment, was destroyed in the fire. The higher authority will investigate the incident and find out the amount of damage as well as the reason behind the fire, he said.
