1 dead, 5 injured in Kashiani clash

One man was killed and five others were injured in a clash over a land dispute in Kashiani of Gopalganj early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Mannan Sheikh, 65, a resident of Khayerhat village.

According to police and locals, there were a long-standing dispute between Mannan Sheikh and Hemayet Sheikh over land issue. An altercation ensued between supporters of the two sides near Khayerhat Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Following the incident, the two sides clashed with each other at around 5:45am on Monday. At one stage, they vandalized each other's houses.

Later, around five to six people of both groups sustained injuries. Mannan Sheikh was taken to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex in critical condition where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Among the injured, one person was admitted to the health complex. Others are receiving treatment in other hospitals to avoid arrest.

Confirming the matter, Kashiani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Firoz Alam said reinforcements were set up in the area. Two were detained for interrogation in this matter. He claimed that the situation is under control at present.
