Woman allegedly beaten to death in Moheshkhali

A homemaker woman was allegedly beaten to death by her in-laws in the Shukria Para area of Moheshkhali on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Emajunnahar alias Moyna Pakhi, 24.

According to locals, neighbours came to Moyna's house after they heard her children crying at around 9:30pm on Saturday. They saw her body hanging from the ceiling fan. She was rushed to the Moheshkhali Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctor declared her dead at around 11pm.

According to a source at the hospital, the woman was dead before being brought to the hospital. Her body bore signs of beating.

Moyna's family claimed that in-laws tortured the woman to death and hung her body to the ceiling fan to fake a suicide.

Meanwhile, after the news of her death spread, locals broke in and vandalised the house. Police recovered her body, while Moyna's husband Lokman Hakim fled the scene.

Moyna's father Md Amir Hossain said that on Saturday, his family along with Moyna and Lokman went to Moheshkhali Sadar for shopping. In the evening, Moyna wanted to stay over at her father's house, but Lokman objected to it. The couple went back to their own house.

Later, Moyna called her father crying and said her husband was beating her. At one point, her phone was taken away. After the call, Moyna’s father was on his way to Moyna's house when he learned about her death.

Confirming the matter, Moheshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Pranab Chowdhury said the woman's body was sent to the morgue. The cause of death can be found after an autopsy. In this connection, legal action will be taken on behalf of the victim's family.
