1 killed, 15 injured in Gournadi road accident

A head-on collision between a bus and a sand-laden power tiller in Gournadi upazila of Barishal has caused the death of one person and also injured at least 15.

The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman Sohag, 22.

According to eyewitnesses, police, fire service and victims of the incident, the collision occurred at the Khanjapur area on the Barishal-Dhaka Highway on Saturday night.

A Dhaka-bound passenger bus from Kuakata sea beach reached the Khanjapur area at around 7:45pm when it collided with a sand-laden power tiller coming from the opposite direction.

The collision heavily damaged the front and right side of the bus. Out of the 40 passengers, at least 15 including women and children were injured.

On information, the Gournadi unit of Fire Service and Civil Defence, Gournadi Highway Police, and locals teamed up to rescue people involved in the accident and took them to the Gournadi Upazila Health Complex.

Sonia Aktar, 22, and Yunus Sardar, 65, were critically injured. They were sent to Dhaka for better treatment.

Confirming the incident, Gournadi Highway Police Station Officer in Charge Md Golam Rasul Mollah told the Daily Samakal, "Drivers of both vehicles and their assistants fled after the accident."
