Natural gas coming out of tube well turns into cooking fuel

Natural gas is coming out of a tube well at Ghanicha village in Kailati union under Kalamkanda upazila of Netrokona. The gas is being used to cook meals, much to the surprise of the locals.

According to the locals, a stream of gas has been coming out from the tube well in Nekbor Ali's house for the last four days. Nekbor Ali's daughter-in-law Sabikun Nahar has been cooking meals for the family using this gas. Locals have been crowding the house to take a peek at the unusual phenomenon.

Nekbor Ali's family said he came from Dhaka four years ago and bought some land in the village. He dug a small pond in the land and also built a house.

Two years ago, a shallow tube well was set to the South of the house. However, the water stopped coming out of the tube well two months later. This year, another tube well was set to the North/East of the house. This tube well also stopped working recently.

Hoping to repair the tube well, its top part was opened up five days ago, when a hissing noise could be heard from the pipeline. Upon inspection, it was found that gas was coming out of the tube well.

Meanwhile, bubbles of gas are also coming out of the two-year-old tube well in the house.

Nekbor Ali's eldest son Saikul Islam said he constructed a mechanism to cook using gas from the tube well. Since then, his wife has been using the gas to cook.
