Teesta flowing above danger mark

The Teesta River has started to swell again with an onrush of water from upstream as a result of heavy rainfall.

At around 6am on Saturday, the water level at Teesta River's Barrage Point was flowing 10cm above the danger mark. All 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage Project were opened, causing the low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat adjacent to the river to become inundated.

Teesta's water level started rising on Friday morning. By 6pm, the water level was flowing 13cm above the danger mark.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Lalmonirhat Executive Engineer Sunil Kumar said Teesta's water level may increase further in the next 24 hours.
