Infant, father dies in Chattogram landslide

A man and his infant daughter died in a landslide in the Sholoshohor area of Chattogram city on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Md Sohel, 35, and his 7-month-old daughter Bibi Jannat. The incident happened at around 7:30am at the IW colony area.

Confirming the matter, Chattogram DC Abul Basar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman told the Daily Samakal that the bodies are kept in the Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue.

According to locals, the hill in the IW colony is at least 50 feet in height. Low-income people made temporary houses at the foot of the hill and lived there. On Sunday morning, heavy rain caused a landslide and buried Md Sohel's house. Four people of the same family were buried under the landslide. Locals and members of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) rescued them and sent them to the hospital, where duty doctors declared Md Sohel and his daughter dead.

"Due to heavy rain, the risk of landslide is high at this time. Inhabitants of the risky IW colony area are being asked to move to safer areas," the DC said.

Chattogram dwellers experienced heavy rain throughout Saturday night, which inundated the roads and alleys of the low areas in the city.
