Gas explosion in Araihazar kills 1, injures 3

An explosion caused by a gas leakage killed one person and injured three others in Araihazar of Narayanganj late on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Nipa Aktar, 35. Three others, namely Md Rahman Miah, 45, Chayna Begum, 35, and Hasina Mamtaj, 55, were burned in the incident.

Confirming the incident, Araihazar Police Station Officer in Charge Imdadul Islam Tyeb said the blast occured on the fourth floor of a house in the Dighirpar area of the Upazila at around 11:30pm on Friday.

According to the Fire Service and Civil Defences (FSCD) and locals, Hasina Mamtaj and her family were renting the house and they took an illegal gas supply line from Titas Gas pipeline. The line was leaking gas for the last few days. On Friday, an electric spark caused the leaked gas to explode loudly.

On information, two units of the Araihazar FSCD reached the spot and put out the fire caused by the blast.  All four of the family were rescued and admitted to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS). Nipa Aktar died while undergoing treatment.
