Workers clash with police on Dhaka-Tangail Highway

RMG workers engaged in multiple rounds of clashes with police after they blocked the highway at Kaliakair of Gazipur demanding higher wages on Thursday.

The clashes broke out at the Palli Bidyut area on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway at around 12:30pm.

Eyewitnesses said police fired tear shells and rubber bullets at the protesting workers. They also charged batton which injured around 50 workers. Chase and counter-chase also took place, during which the workers threw brickbats at the police.

Around 50-60 vehicles were vandalised during the clashes. A Pajero car was also set on fire at the Palli Bidyut area.

Heavy traffic congestion was created due to the blockade and the ensuing clashes. Many passengers were seen disembarking their vehicles and walking towards their destination.

RMG workers have been protesting on the highway for the last four days, demanding a minimum wage of Tk 23,000.
