3 cops severely injured in Narayanganj

Three members of the police were injured in a clash with BNP activists on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at Araihazar of Narayanganj on Tuesday morning.

The three injured cops were Inspector Humayun Kabir, Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Matin, and Constable Md Nurul, Narayanganj Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Abir Hossain confirmed.

Constable Nurul is in critical condition as he sustained injuries to his head. He was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Inspector Humayun Kabir's right hand was hacked, and his left hand was broken. ASI Matin was beaten with a stick and brickbats. They are now receiving treatment at a private hospital in Rupganj.

Later, Inspector Humayun Kabir will be taken to the National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).

The clash in the Pachrukhi area broke out after BNP leaders and activists blocked the highway in support of a three-day countrywide blockade enforced by BNP and like-minded political parties.

BNP activists burned tires and vandalised at least three buses, bringing traffic to a stop. On information, police reached the area and engaged in a round of chase and counter-chase. BNP men hurled brickbats and cocktails at the police. Police shot rubber bullets and tear shells to disperse the activists.

The three police members were caught and beaten severely during a counter-chase with BNP activists.

Police brought the situation under control and traffic resumed after around 1.5 hours.

Three people were detained from the area after the crash.
