More than 100 RMG factories closed indefinitely

More than a hundred RMG factories in Savar's Ashulia area have closed down indefinitely in the face of mounting discontent from workers regarding minimum wage.

RMG factory owners have shown various reasons behind the closures such as workers not joining work and vandalism, said Md Sarwar Alam, superintendent of police of Ashulia Industrial Police-1.

Workers tried to gather on the roads after more than a hundred RMG factories put up notice regarding the closure, he said. But they were dispersed, so no untoward incidents happened so far.

RMG factories in Kathgara Jirabo, Jamgara, Narsinghapur put up such signs.

Hisher Ahmed, a worker in the Envoy factory, said many workers are unhappy about the 12,500/- minimum wage.

Nasa Group RMG factory worker Beauty Akhtar said, "We want factories to open. Suddenly closing the factory indefinitely is bad for everyone."

She also said, "We have accepted the wage of helpers. But there was no talk regarding the wages of Iron Man, Operator, or Quality Controllers. That is the problem."
