Passenger killed as dense fog causes launch collision

A passenger was killed after two launches collided on the Meghna River in the Haimchar area early on Tuesday in thick fog. Ten others were injured in the incident.

The identity of the deceased could not be known yet.

According to the Coast Guard and River Police, the collision between MV Suravi-8 and Tipu Sultan launches collided in the Sahebganj area at around 12:30am.

The Dhaka-bound MV Suravi-8 from Barishal's Ilisha and Charfashion-bound Tipu-14 from Dhaka collided while crossing Char Bhairabi of Haimchar. 

A passenger of the Suravi-8 launch died on the spot. His body was taken to Sadarghat.

"Thick fog caused the two launches to hit each other and caused the casualty," said SP Mohammad Kamruzzaman of Chandpur region River Police.
