RMG workers block Dhaka-Tangail Highway

Readymade Garments (RMG) workers blocked the Dhaka-Tangail Highway at Konabari of Gazipur on Saturday morning, demanding a wage raise.

According to police and workers, around 700 workers of the Mego Bangladesh Limited (Bay Economic Zone) blocked the highway and started a demonstration at around 7:30am, halting traffic and causing a massive tailback on the highway.

The workers expressed several demands, such as - including them in the new wage structure announced by the government, fixing the wage as per 8 work hours instead of 10 hours, paying overtime as per the government rule, and more.

Regarding the issue, Meigo Bangladesh Limited Admin Manager Khalid Hasan said the wages of the workers were hiked but they were not satisfied. They are trying to resolve the matter.

Confirming the matter, Gazipur Metropolitan Konabari Police Station Officer in Charge Mohammad Ziaul Islam said, the workers had left the highway and traffic was restored to normal.
