Lighter vessel with 700 tonne coal sinks in Bhairab River

A lighter vessel laden with 700 tonnes of coal capsized in the Bhairab River at Jashore's Nowapara on Tuesday morning.

The bottom of the ship MV Purbanchal-7 developed a crack, causing water to enter and capsize the vessel. The price of coal in the vessel was around Tk 1,35,00,000.

According the the vessel's master Md Enayet Hossain, the coal was imported by Messrs JHM Group. It left from Harbaria on January 6 and anchored at Bhatpara Kheyaghat on January 7, where it remained for the last few days. Water started entering the ship at around 11am on Tuesday.

Jagadish Chandra Mandal, an official of the Messrs JHM Group's Nowapara office, said a General Diary will be filed at the Abhaynagar Police Station. They are trying to recover the sunken coal.
