Ferry sinks in Padma River, 10 rescued

A ferry capsized after a collision with a bulkhead vessel near the Ferry Ghat no 5 of Paturia in the Padma River on Wednesday morning.

The ferry named "Rajanigandha" capsized at around 8:30am, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation Aricha Office Manager (Commerce) Md Salam Hossain confirmed to the media.

According to him, the ferry left from Daulatdia at around midnight with 9 trucks. As the fog thickened, the ferry anchored in mid-river. It started towards Paturia again after 8am. It collided with a bulkhead vessel near Ferry Ghat no 5 and capsized.

Due to dense fog, ferry movement on the Daulatdia-Paturia route was paused from 1:30am on Wednesday.

Divers and members of the Fire Service and Civil Defence are working to recover the Ferry, Shibalay Police Station Officer in Charge Abdur Rouf Sarkar confirmed.

So far, ten people were rescued. Four of them swam to the shore and six were rescued by the FSCD. Ferry's captain Humayun Hossain remains missing.
