Worker-police clash injured 10 in Kaliakair

Several rounds of clashes broke out between police and workers in Kaliakair of Gazipur since Monday morning. Workers threw brickbats at police, who in turn charged batons, and lobbed tear shells and sound grenades to disperse them. Ten people, including cops, were injured in the incident.

The Mouchak Dokanpar area near the Dhaka-Tangail Highway became engulfed in chaos as the two parties clashed between 8am and 11am. 15-20 cars were vandalized. Shops were closed in the area.

Around noon, the clashes stopped, but both police and workers have taken up positions in the area. People injured in the clashes were given treatment locally.

According to police, workers, and locals, workers of 10-12 factories have been demanding a wage hike. On Monday, hundreds of workers of a factory of the Mandal Group blocked the highway. Police failed to negotiate with them and clashes broke out.
