Gas explosion burns 6 in Narayanganj

Six of a family suffered burn injuries from an explosion in the Bagpara area of Siddhirganj in Narayanganj. The blast occurred when one of them tried to light a mosquito coil in the cooking stove at around 10:30pm on Wednesday.

Locals assume that the blast could have happened due to gas leakage. The injured are Sukhi Akhtar, 35, her sister Rahima Akhtar, 30, Arif, 20, Sadia Akhtar, 12, Jannat Akhtar, 18, and Ritu Akhtar, 12.

The injured were admitted to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS) in Dhaka on Wednesday night.

According to Rahima's husband Jahangir Alam, Sukhi Akhtar and Rahima Akhtar lived next door to each other. Rahima and his daughter Ritu were visiting Sukhi on Wednesday night. Suddenly the blast occurred when someone tried to light a mosquito coil on the stove. After the blast, everyone was rushing about in a panic. They were able to douse the fire, but six of them ended up being burned.

Adamji Fire Station Officer Sabbir Ahmed said the incident was being investigated.
