Fear of flood looms over Sunamganj

Low-lying areas of the Sunamganj district have become inundated due to the onrush of water from upstream, posing the risk of an imminent flood despite a lack of heavy rain. 

The water from upstream started to rise rapidly from 5am Tuesday (18 June). Surma river overflowed and its water level rose 2.20 feet above the danger mark at the Shologhar point of the city. Many areas of the city have become inundated. 

The daily life of people in the district has been disrupted due to the situation. The fear of flood has prompted many of them to leave their homes and seek refuge at the shelters. 

The Water Development Board has said the water levels will continue to rise. District Commissioner Mohammad Rashed Iqbal Chowdhury said, all the rivers are overflowing with water. Heavy rain will make the situation impossible to control. As a precaution, the district authority has readied aid and shelters for a possible flood situation.
