Water levels of Dharala, Brahmaputra Rivers above danger level

Due to continuous heavy rainfall and an onrush of water from upstream, water levels of the Dharala and Brahmaputra Rivers have swelled to rise above danger levels. Consequently, nearly 80 chars and shoals in the adjacent area have become inundated, creating the risk of another flood. 

According to Kurigram Water Development Board (WDB), the water level of the Dharala River rose 49 centimetres to flow 10 centimetres above the danger level at Taluk Shimulbari point. Meanwhile, the water level of the Brahmaputra River rose 55 centimetres to flow 14 centimetres above the danger level at Nunkhawa point. 

Subal Chandra Sarkar, chief of Kurigram's Rajarhat Agricultural Meteorological Office, said that 130 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours in the district. It may continue for a couple more days. 

Meanwhile, Kurigram WDB Executive Engineer Rakibul Hasan said the water levels of Teesta and Dudhkumar Rivers may cross the danger level within the next 24 hours. It may cause another flood. 

District Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Arif said that the district authority is distributing relief among the people, and there are more than 400 shelters prepared.
