Gopalganj's bronze ornament gains GI status

Gopalganj's bronze ornament was recognized as the 2nd Geographical Indication (GI) product of the district. 

Confirming the matter, District Commissioner Kazi Mahbubul Alam on Friday said this recognition will improve the quality of life of the artisans involved in making such ornaments. 

Applications to grant GI status to bronze ornaments were sent to the related ministry and divisions on 12 March this year. 

Previously, the district's 'rosgolla' received GI status. 

In 2013, the Geographical Indication Products (Registration and Protection) Act was enacted. In 2015, the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) called for the registration of GI products after the formulation of the Act.

Mentionable, the Jamdani saree was recognized as a GI product for the first time in Bangladesh in 2016.
